Tips and Lessons from production!

And that is a WRAP! We filmed our first short film as Pink Mud Productions!

It has been an incredible first year for Pink Mud Productions. We expanded our commercial portfolio by working with brands such as Fit and Fearless and The Artery, and the cherry on top was wrapping our first narrative short film as a company! Here are some of the lessons we learned as producers:

Be present at every creative meeting. Yes, you do have to be there. Even if you are not actively pitching creative ideas, you want to ensure you are involved in every creative decision to keep your team on budget and protect your crew from any potential overload.

Have contracts early on! Let there be no misunderstandings regarding pay, scope of work, and potential variables. Protect yourself and your team.

Learn when to say yes and when to say no. Your budget will thank you!

If you are doing a crowdfunding campaign, determine early on who will be in the front seat of the campaign and whose audience you’ll be targeting. As a producer, you can always choose to use your audience, but the person hiring and paying should be the one responsible for handling the bulk of the campaign.

Set time boundaries and non-invasive forms of communication. Be clear on when you are available for work and what the best form of communication is. Emails should generally be the first option, reserving texts for emergencies. Hold weekly meetings the closer you get to production.

Set a limit on how many script reviews you will do. The budget will change with almost every review, which can quickly add to your workload.

Budget money for insurance!

If you need to obtain a permit from a location in the city, make sure you apply early, follow up as needed, and, if necessary, physically visit the location to ask for a direct point of contact.

And now, as we move on to post-production for our short Good Will, we also open the doors to our next project! We are excited to share that new episodes of our web series New Me are brewing, and Jenny is in development on her first feature!

Thank you for your support!
